Special Issue on “Knowledge Integration in Ocean Governance”

14.04.2025

Together with Dorothea Wehrmann from the German Institute of Development and Sustainability in Bonn, Dr. Annegret Kuhn, researcher at CeOS, acted as guest editor for a Special Issue on “Knowledge Integration in Ocean Governance” in the peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal Ocean and Society.

While the integration of diverse knowledges is considered essential in ocean governance to understand and address the complex and transboundary changes affecting oceans and societies, empirical evidence about the actual experiences, formats, and processes of knowledge integration in ocean governance is limited. This Special Issue derives from the notion that the coordination and integration of diverse knowledges to develop advanced understandings is a political process shaped by, amongst other things, societal inequalities and different forms of governance. To assess the implication of this notion for the governance of the oceans, and to provide new insights on knowledge integration processes in ocean governance, the 13 contributions shed light on different governance formats, the role of participatory and co‐creative approaches to knowledge integration, their potentials, limitations, and related micropolitics across regions and scales.
