Science Talk: Living lab Eckernförde Bay

17.08.2022

Dr. Christian Wagner-Ahlfs reports on his experiences from the project and what this means for the future of coastal and marine protection.

How can science help to protect our Baltic Sea? Possible answers to this question have been developed by scientists from Kiel University (CAU) and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel in the project Living Lab Eckernförde 2030 - together with experts, water sports enthusiasts, the city of Eckernförde and users such as campsite operators. The main focus is on new opportunities for coastal and marine protection and the preservation of a healthy marine environment. As part of the project, the ecological interrelationships of marine habitats were investigated and, together with the stakeholders, measures were derived that contribute to the sustainable use of the Eckernförde Bay. In the first Science Talk of the KielRegion and the Science Festival, experts will present the results of the project and invite discussion with visitors.

Project leader Dr. Christian Wagner-Ahlfs, Kiel Marine Science (KMS) and Center for Ocean and Society (CeOS), will report on his experiences from the project and what this means for the future of coastal and marine protection. Also looking forward to an exciting discussion and many questions, are: Jens Albrecht, Head of Department for Nature Conservation and Landscape Planning of the City of Eckernförde, Professor Dr. Martin Wahl and Philipp Schubert from GEOMAR, and Tanja Miranda, environmental activist and operator of the SUP School Fördekeks. The event will be moderated by TV presenter Kristin Recke.
