Dialog Küstenfischerei
Dialogue for shaping the future of fisheries in Schleswig-Holstein
Coastal fisheries are an essential, defining, and historically significant sector of Schleswig-Holstein, operating in a confined space and competing with other uses (e.g., wind energy, military, tourism, nature and environmental conservation). Due to anthropogenic effects such as climate change, eutrophication/increasing oxygen depletion, and overfishing, as well as the growing number of predators, coastal ecosystems are undergoing significant changes.
These current challenges necessitate a structural transformation within coastal fisheries, which must be supported and guided (see the final report of the Vision Commission on the Future of German Baltic Fisheries).
As part of the Dialog Küstenfischerei, regular meetings are held with representatives from fisheries, nature and environmental conservation, administration, local politics, and science. The aim is to exchange information on current developments in coastal fisheries in the western Baltic Sea and, through discussions and networking among various stakeholders, contribute to shaping the future of fisheries in Schleswig-Holstein.
Each dialogue invites experts from various institutions and disciplines to facilitate knowledge transfer between science and practice. During the three-year funding period, topics such as “Expanding vocational training for fisheries professionals,” “Protection and utilization of the Baltic Sea,” and “Fisheries and spatial competition” will be discussed.
